Legal support charity Support Through Court have launched their Christmas campaign, ‘Be a light for litigants’. The campaign shines a light on the challenges faced by people facing court alone. It features stories from individuals who share how they found going through court, highlighting how emotionally difficult the process can be.
Support Through Court, a charity dedicated to helping people navigating the legal system, offers practical information and emotional support to those unable to afford a lawyer or access legal aid. The charity’s Christmas video looks at what it’s like navigating a confusing court process without representation.
Emma Taylor, CEO of Support Through Court, says, ‘We don’t talk enough about how emotionally challenging going through court can be for people without representation. Often through no choice of their own, people must represent themselves at a moment that could have life-changing outcomes such as loss of access to children or homelessness. It’s incredibly emotional, and when you add to that the confusion of facing court without a lawyer, it can be a huge burden for these individuals.
This Christmas, we’re shining a light on the pressures people face because we want to see this change. We want it to be as easy as possible for people to access the help and support they need at such a challenging time.’
It costs £32 to provide one session of practical and emotional support to someone facing court alone. Support Through Court are fundraising to provide 125 more people with support this Christmas, with a target of £4000.
