The Legal Software Suppliers Association (LSSA) has responded to the growing use of artificial intelligence in technology by launching a new policy document on environmental, social and governance (ESG), setting out a framework to support responsible growth, ethical innovation and trusted digital transformation across the legal technology sector.
The membership body says the policy reflects its role in promoting best practice, supporting members at different stages of ESG maturity and strengthening trust in legal systems through secure, transparent technology.
Although ESG and sustainability may not currently command the same level of attention across the wider business world, the association says its members are clear these issues remain important and recognise the legal technology sector has a responsibility to deliver innovation in a way that is sustainable, inclusive and well governed.
This is particularly important in the adoption of AI, the association said, as members continue to enhance their software and services with AI functionality. The new policy highlights the importance of transparency, fairness, accountability, human oversight, data protection and strong governance in the development and use of AI tools.
There is also a shared focus on bringing maximum benefits to legal firms while reducing risks to a minimum, CEO Kevin Horlock explained. He added: “There may be less noise around ESG than there was a few years ago, but for our members the need for responsibility, good governance and long-term thinking has always been a top priority and has never gone away.
“As AI becomes a bigger part of legal software, it is vital that the sector gets this right. The opportunities are significant, but so are the risks if governance, transparency and accountability are lacking. This policy reflects our commitment to helping members support legal firms with technology that is innovative, ethical, secure and fit for the future.”
The policy also covers sustainable digital practices, access to justice, workforce development, diversity, inclusion and alignment with key UN sustainable development goals.
