Outage causes disruption to millions of users
This morning users of the app WhatsApp from around the world reported the messaging service had gone down.
The app which has over two billion users has unexpectantly shut down this morning, with reports and complaints filing in before 8am this morning.
Downdetector, which records the service status of sites and apps showed there were over 68,000 reports of WhatsApp going down in the UK alone.
Users reported that the app was not receiving, or sending any messages and a “Connecting…” symbol would appear whenever users tried to refresh messages.
However, the app is reportedly back up and working for users now.
A WhatsApp spokesperson said:
“We know people had trouble sending messages on WhatsApp today. We have fixed the issue and apologise for any inconvenience.”
The outage has caused huge disruption for many and caused the parent company of WhatsApp, Meta, stock’s to fall by 0.7% since the app went down.
The messaging platform, owned by Meta, who also own Facebook and Instagram, have not yet commented on what has caused this and have failed to disclose the reason for the outage.
