In the build-up to the US presidential elections a campaign called ‘Roevember’ has gained celebrity support and considerable traction online in a bid to encourage the public to vote for Democrat candidate Kamala Harris.
After the historic overturning of the Roe v Wade abortion law has seen Arizona women prevented from terminating a pregnancy unless in ‘exceptional circumstances’, voters have taken to social media to campaign against the spread of ‘archaic’ abortion laws, with some saying the women of Arizona state are ‘living in 1864’. Changes to abortion laws have been seen across 20 US states, with Arizona’s new legislation one of the strictest bans.
The #Roevember campaign has been shared thousands of times with celebrities such as Barbara Bush and Hollywood star Charisma Carpenter publicly pledging support for the movement. New Hampshire Senator Becky Whitley shared on Instagram that she thought ‘Kamala Harris is the only candidate to support reproductive freedom #Roevember.’
A 28-year-old mother from Georgia called Amber Thurman who died of septic shock in 2022, ‘as a result’ of Georgia’s MAGA abortion ban has been referenced online, spurring Presidential hopeful Harris to make a statement. “This young mother should be alive raising her son and pursuing her dream of attending nursing school,” she said, “This is exactly what we feared when Roe was struck down. In more than 20 states, Trump abortion bans are preventing doctors from providing basic medical care. Women are bleeding out in parking lots, turned away from emergency rooms losing the ability to ever have children again.
“Survivors of rape and incest are told they can’t make choices about their body. There is so much at stake in this election, including restoring the freedoms that have been taken away from us.”
She also claimed that if ‘Trump got the chance’ he would implement a national abortion ban.
US President Joe Biden has said in a public statement: “Those bragging about the overturning of Roe V Wade have no clue about the power of women.”
