Nelsons expands family law team with new hire

East Midlands firm Nelsons has welcomed a new senior associate to strengthen its offering in the Derby region.

Alex Wood has joined the team after six years working at Geldards, where she has developed an in-depth knowledge and experience in children law. She also works on and enjoys dealing with divorce and financial matters, including complex cases involving businesses and trusts.

She is currently vice chair for Resolution in Nottingham and East Midlands; a community of family justice professionals who work with families and individuals to resolve issues in a constructive way. Alex also sits on the committee for YRES (Young Resolution) Nottingham and East Midlands and was part of the launch of YRES for the region in 2020.

Alex was shortlisted for Derby Junior Lawyer of the Year in 2023 and until recently, sat as secretary for the Derby Junior Lawyers’ Division. She said:

“I chose to specialise in family law as there was a great mix of cases, and I particularly enjoy working with individuals and being able to really help people. I have gradually become focused on children law, which is an area I am keen to progress in, as well as continuing to work on divorce and finance cases.

When considering the next step in my career, I was impressed by the investment Nelsons puts into both personal and business development; it has a refreshing culture and an encouraging atmosphere that just felt like the right fit.

Emma Davies is a really vibrant and innovative head of department and having discussed plans to grow the children law service, it feels like a great time to join. I hope to be able to support the Derby team in expanding further as well as offering my support and advice to the next generation of talented lawyers.”

Emma Davies, partner and head of the family law department at Nelsons, said:

“Alex is an exceptionally talented solicitor, with a great level of knowledge in family law that we felt complimented our team well.

“As well as boosting our divorce and finance offering, her focus in children law will be a huge support as we continue to grow in this area. We are keen to keep developing our team in Derby and building the presence there, and Alex has already hit the ground running, so we are very excited that she’s joined us.”
