NSPCC: 62 children per day referred to agencies in 2021

New data and research released by the NSPCC paints a worrying picture of the abuse and neglect faced by children.

The NSPCC has published new data relating to the usage of their NSPCC Helpline from 2021 to 2022. The data shows that the Helpline made referrals to agencies such as children’s services and the police in relation to 22,505 children in the past year, which averages at around 62 children per day over concerns about abuse and neglect.

Further NSPCC data also indicates that of the 22,505 referrals made to police or children’s services:

  • 8,389 related to concerns of neglect
  • 6,441 related to physical abuse
  • 4,418 related to emotional abuse
  • 3,013 relation to sexual abuse
  • and 244 for sexual abuse online.

Notably, over 66% of cases referred to children’s services and the police were in relation to children aged nine and under.

Statistics show that half a million children a year suffer abuse in the UK, which means that seven children in a classroom experience abuse before they turn 18. In response to these shocking statistics the NSPCC has launched Childhood Day to highlight ways in which child abuse can be stopped. Childhood Day 2022 takes place on 10th June and more information on initiatives and how to get involved can be found on the Childhood Day website.

The NSPCC Helpline is a free, confidential helpline that anyone can contact if they have concerns about a child’s safety or wellbeing. The contact number is 0808 800 5000 and operates between 8am-10pm Monday to Friday and 9am-6pm at the weekends. There is also an email address, help@nspcc.org.uk.
