Lesson pack teaching students about relationships receives PSHE Quality Mark

BBS Law has announced that the PSHE Quality Mark has been awarded to the lesson pack “Modern families” which aims to inform pupils make informed decisions about future relationships.

The lesson pack, which is free-to-access, aims to provides 14- to 16-year-olds information on healthy relationships and aims to support the Government’s plans to improve relationships education. The pack was formed in collaboration between the University of Exeter and Resolution, a community of family law professional who aim to resolve family disputes constructively.

The lessons will teach students about formalising relationship and how marriages become validated, the legal consequences of different family forms, and the importance of understanding the differences of legally and non-legally binding relationships. BBS Law have also stated that a key objective of the pack is to correct the common misconception that unmarried couples who live together for a long period of time automatically have the same rights as married couples.

Graeme Fraser, Head of Family Law and Partner at BBS Law, and the Chair of Resolution’s Cohabitation Committee, commented:

“I am deeply proud to have been closely involved in the development of the “Modern Families” lesson plans which will better inform school pupils to understand the legal status of marriage, and how those couples who cohabit or who have married in an unregistered religious ceremony do not enjoy the same legal rights and protections.

Carefully crafted by leading academics and specialist family lawyers, these lesson plans will help future generations to better understand their legal rights and how they contrast depending on whether they are unmarried, married or in a registered civil partnership.

While public awareness of these matters is essential, until cohabitation law is comprehensively informed, it is also essential that specialist legal advice is obtained on a bespoke basis by anyone who wishes to better understand their rights when they form a relationship, and on relationship breakdown or death.”
