A charity based in Sheffield has launched a CPD-certified training programme for legal professionals to help with better understanding impact of coercive control and post-separation abuse.
Charity Mums In Need offers long-term, trauma-informed support to mothers experiencing post-separation abuse. The newly launched training, entitled ‘Confronting Coercive Control and Post-Separation Abuse’ is tailored to legal professionals, including solicitors, barristers, family court advisers, providing a deeper understanding of coercive control and post-separation abuse; and issues that are often hidden, misunderstood, and misrepresented in legal proceedings.
The training is hosted online and runs for two hours.
Post-separation abuse can severely impact both survivors and children, yet it frequently goes unrecognised within the legal system say Mums In Need, who also advocate for systemic change within the legal and social care sectors to better recognise and respond to emotional and psychological abuse after separation. The charity says the training addresses that gap, equipping legal professionals with practical, evidence-informed tools to:
- Recognise the subtle yet insidious nature of coercive control
- Respond appropriately and empathetically to survivor disclosures
- Strengthen safeguarding outcomes in family court settings
- Enhance advocacy by using trauma-informed approaches
- Improve confidence when navigating complex emotional abuse cases
“This is about empowering professionals to make informed decisions that protect survivors and children,”
said Laura Riley, Founder and CEO of Mums In Need.
“Our goal is to support legal professionals in developing the awareness and sensitivity needed to avoid retraumatising those they aim to help, and ultimately contribute to better, safer outcomes.”
The courses will run on various dates over the next couple of months and are limited to 15 attendees per session.
