The Today’s Family Lawyer Podcast was launched in 2022 with the aim of introducing listeners to the organisations and individuals who contribute to the success of the family law sector. Over the previous four series, and 64 episodes the podcast has covered topics from cohabitation, pensions, no fault divorce, and the rise of private FDRs through to the evolving language of law, new models of employment, the impact of covid-19 on parenting, and the campaign to recognise pets as property.
With over 7,500 downloads since launch it is forging a reputation alongside the Today’s Family Lawyer publication, as the go-to resource for family law professionals for news, view, insight and best practice.
Over the course of the latest series Today’s Family Lawyer Podcast host David Opie has welcomed former Resolution Chair Grant Cameron, leading legal charity LawCare, fast-growing amicable and The Family Mediation Trust among many others, on to the podcast to discuss issue facing family lawyers day in day out.
Stand out episodes in this series include a discussion with Annmarie Carvalho, director of The Carvalho Consultancy (TCC), to discuss her work at the intersection of law and therapy recognising the psychological complexities inherent in family law and equipping lawyers with practical tools to manage the emotional weight of their work.
Peter Burgess, Founding Partner at Burgess Mee Family Law, and Hannah Budd, Partner at the Rosefield Divorce Consultancy, joined David Opie to explore how family law professionals can best support clients in crisis through a trauma-informed framework developed to help clients navigate separation and divorce with greater emotional safety and clarity.
Following in the footsteps of Australia and Spain, the campaign to recognise pets as property rather than chattels, has built up momentum in 2025 with the launch of a new working group earlier this year looking at how UK legislation could be amended to better deal with the increasing number of disputes between separating partners when it comes to pets. The discussion focuses on both the emotional and legal elements, highlighting how courts in England and Wales often overlook the welfare of the animal or the emotional bonds involved.
One of the most listened podcasts of the year came from Shoba Aziz, an experienced barrister at Great James St Chambers, discussing the impact of narcissistic behaviour and gaslighting. Shoba shares her deep expertise in private child and family law, especially in cases involving coercive control and emotional manipulation. She explains how narcissistic traits and gaslighting manifest within relationships, often leaving victims confused, isolated, and doubting their own reality.
